And the trees turned yellow...

The frantic pace and diversity of activity in life these days is ironically mind numbing. I'm like a crisp leaf floating in the cool afternoon autumn breeze, not bothered about where I end up, changing course at the slightest persuasion. Yesterday I finally talked to Prof. Sen about the CCS (Contemporary Concerns Study) Project, and he suggested we study the various models of fiscal stimulus. Initially my project partner and I started with topics that sound a lot more interesting, like "The dead weight loss of festival gifts" and "The chastening of frivolous consumption in times of recession". We also wanted to get our hands dirty and work on a project that would involve a lot of ground work and involvement with some local setup/community. However as things stand, we might be sitting in our sleepy hostel rooms googling Obama's whimsical allocation of the next billion and giving our well grounded economic critique on South Africa's plan to increase public sector employment.

Like all other things at IIM Bangalore however, there isn't the slightest sense of stability about this topic, in mind or due to the fragility of Sec. Clinton's haphazard coordinated-stimulus efforts. I have however taken a few decisions that I presently  think might stick. One is going for exchange. Now that the latest final ranks has been released, I think I am probably going to end up in a school called ESADE in Barcelona for a few months near the end of this year. Some very complicated maths and logic went into ensuring that I do not reach France. So much for me. No, one more thing. The company conducting the background check on me have reluctantly given my summer employer the go ahead to grant me a work permit. So I shall be making it to Singapore this summer, and I shall also be wasting the next couple of weeks looking for a decent accommodation there.

As for the mood around campus, its rather somber these days. All the PGP2's are busy taking their block snaps and playing the last rounds of Counter Strike. I think I am going to miss all the late night parties in G-block. When the rigors of B-School could not ensure lack of sleep, the seniors in my block compensated, and even a movie crew pitched in for a few days. Its been almost 9 months since I got here, and now I have managed to master the art of wasting all available time and crib about staying awake late.

The campus is a riot of colors these days, and most days in class I keep looking at the bougainvillea outside the class through the tall windows. It makes a pretty picture and I plan to take a camera to class one of these days to capture a few interesting shots. Yesterday I noticed that L^2 was full of yellow flowers, and the trees above had no leaves, only flowers and a couple came floating down every once in a while. That was enough motivation for the lazy photographer inside me to take some snaps, and I did. Am planning to take out a series of "IIM Bangalore" wallpapers, and will post the lot together.

For now I shall get back to reading my economics text, which strangely is the only subject I seem to like. Atleast it feels relevant. Its a good time to study economics. I read part of a book called "Everlasting Lightbulbs" by John Kay, basically a collection of short insightful articles about everyday economics. Has motivated me to buy "The Armchair Economist". My agenda for my next trip to Landmark is set.

Posting a small version of the "Yellow Tree @ L^2" till I gather the other snaps. Stay zoned...

My Photo
Name: Vivek Kapoor
Location: Delhi, India

I'm just another face in the crowd. I have the same dreams as every other engineer in the country, the same lifestyle, the same aspirations. Yet, we all feel we are so different. Maybe we are, but we do little to prove it. We do little to live by our convictions, to share our thoughts. I'm trying to do a million things at once. Thinking about my future is more a habit than a hobby, and running an e-commerce website my present biggest obsession. Yet, on paper, I'm just another software professional like so many others.. doing a 11-5 (yeah, lovely timings) job. This blog is testimony to the fact that I may not get very far, like millions of others, but still, I'm different, and hopefully, I'll get around to proving myself.
